Olea & Fig x Create & Cultivate: What Does It Mean to Be a Minority, Women-Owned Business in the Online Space?

"Aw, that's cute." is the most common reply I get at networking events, or simply whenever I meet someone new.

Here's why I feel annoyed and offended by this comment.

Since we started Olea & Fig, we have experienced and felt the clear distinction between the attitudes people have toward female versus male entrepreneurs. Instead of the accolades people give to men in Silicon Valley who are “starting an app” and working out of their garages, we get… "Aw, that's cute."

I heard this too often that I now know when that comment is genuine and appropriate, and when that's a way to NOT take people seriously.

All the negative experiences I encountered as a female entrepreneur continues to fuel our belief that - All women and girls SHOULD have the opportunities to achieve success, whatever it may mean to them.

We had the pleasure to share our take and thoughts with Create & Cultivate about what it truly means to be a minority #fempreneur.

I shared what we learned from our experience and lessons learned from being a minority at school, picking up English as a 2nd language, working in a male-dominated corporate environment, and starting our business as an Asian woman under 30… AND how to gain and harness our power as a minority!
