Knowing your customers is the key to building your dream business.

And I’m not talking just demographics here.

When you understand what they want and communicate with them in ways that meet and even exceed their expectations, you can create what they truly want, keep your customers coming back to you, and continue to grow a community of loyal customers who can’t stop spreading the word for you.

So, how do you get inside the mind of your customers? Conducting customer research is a must. And if you aren’t sure where to begin your research or how else you can better understand your customers, or maybe you still believe that you need to hire marketing professionals or agencies for help, here are 3 simple steps you can start today to get to know your customers:

STEP 1. Connect with your target customers

The easiest way to get inside the mind of your customers is through your connection with them. Identify how you relate to your customers - are they similar to the past you, the present you, or the future you? In what ways? If you can connect with your target customers on a personal level, you would have a much better idea of their lifestyle, a day in their life, where they get information, and where they gather.

Note that it’s not impossible to serve an audience who you cannot relate to. It would simply take a much greater effort, time, and money to understand and connect with them.

STEP 2. Find five people

Now that you have an idea of where they gather and where they go for information, show up where they are, online or offline. Then find five people and set up a casual online meeting for an interview. The important thing here is that they have to be your target customers. Otherwise, any response you collect during the interview would not be helpful to your business because it doesn’t provide any customer insight to you.

If possible, record these online interviews so you can review them later. These are especially helpful if you are trying to gain insight into how they describe their challenge and their needs in their language, which you can further leverage for your marketing copy.

STEP 3. Ask your biggest questions

Make a list of all your biggest questions about your customers. Think beyond demographics and what your sell specifically. Focus on getting to know their behaviors, lifestyle, and psychographics, and pay attention to any specific language they use.

Here are some examples:

- Where do they go for information?

- What’s a day in their life like?

- What do they value when they make purchases?

- What are their biggest challenges and headaches when they are shopping for what you sell?

- What solution are they looking for?

- What do they desire most from products or services like yours?

Go through these three simple steps to kick start your customer research. Based on your conversations with your target customers, tailor your business, what you sell, and how you market specifically to them. Give your customers what they truly want and keep them coming back to you!
