Here’s what I see everywhere - Minimal style still seems to be lots of businesses’ go-to style. The color terra cotta and mustard have also been trending.

I’m personally a big fan of these styles. But let’s face it, when it comes to deciding on the brand style for YOUR BUSINESS, it’s not just about you, your likes and dislikes. Plus, we all have way too many styles we love, if you were to go with what you like, how would you choose?

Your brand style is more than your personal preferences. But going with what’s popular isn't going to work either. Another style is going to take over, most likely in 2 years. Plus, if every other business already jumps on the trending style, what makes you different?

It’s a business we’re talking about here, and your business is created for the people you serve and for you to do the work you do. Right? So, we gotta choose the style that actually works, that attracts your people, that expresses you, and that strengthens and helps market your business!

If your brand style isn’t just what you personally like, but it also isn’t what’s popular, how do you define your brand style that attracts your ideal customers? Here are the 3 steps to get you started -

1. You’re part of your brand

Dive deeper, way deeper than just the look and colors of your brand. First and foremost, what changes are you making to your people through what you do? This is your personal mission. A change or topic you’re passionate about. What transformation or results are you giving your people through what you do? Perhaps it’s owning a growing business that markets itself through copywriting? Or an elevated lifestyle through home goods? Or a more well-rounded life through travel booking services?

Think bigger, beyond your services and products, and tie it closely to your personal mission and purpose. Where are you taking people through what you do? Find out how you, your mission and your business are all connected and tied together.

2. What human emotional need(s) are you fulfilling?

What desire and aspiration do your target customers have? Based on your answer to #1, what emotional desire are you giving them through the results or transformation? Think beyond the demographics, understand their ultimate wants. What human emotions and desires is your brand tapping into?

Are you giving them a sense of belonging with your restaurant? Or empowerment with your educational programs? Or freedom of expression through your clothing line?

3. What style creates the particular desire and emotion you want to give people?

Now that you know what specific emotional need you want to provide with your brand, how should your brand look to enhance this need? How can your colors and the aesthetics of your brand strengthen this emotion or desire? What style would lead to the feelings you want to give people?

Don’t create another pretty brand, create a brand that grows and makes a difference. Use an “inside-out approach”, and Define and strategize a brand style that connects you, your personal why’s, your people’s inner desire and emotional needs, and your business. Create a brand style that sticks and that truly resonates with your target customers.
