One of the hardest parts of growing a business is staying focused. It requires persistence and effective planning.

There are always a million things that call for our attention inside or outside our business, and we sometimes find ourselves falling into the trap of doing busywork and trying to catch up to our never-ending to-do list. And the worse part? We end up spending time and energy on things that keep us busy but aren’t bringing us progress.

The noise and shiny objects are and will always be there. But guess what? It’s totally up to us to decide how we want to respond and take action!

And how do we make sure we’re wearing our CEO hats and make a sound and smart decision? Get into the habit of practicing these 3 things.

#1 Get Clear On What Matters

Not likes, not followers, not another sale. What matters is happy customers, passionate employees, your business growth, and your vision of how your business adds values to other people.

Go through everything on your to-do list, circle anything that isn’t serving any of these, either remove it or delegate it!

#2 Make A 90-Day Plan

This is NOT another to-do list. It’s a plan that is mapped out based on your 90-day goals. From there, you can come up with a more effective to-do list that will prevent busywork and prioritize what matters and moves the needle.

Now that you know what matters to you, list out your 1-3 biggest goals in the next 90 days. Based on your 90-day goal(s), form your monthly goals that will get you there. Now that you know what you need to achieve in each of the next 3 months, plan for your weekly to-do’s that will get you closer to your monthly goals.

What you just wrote down will be your top priorities every week, and everything else should come after your top priorities from the 90-Day Plan are completed. If you start each day with these top priorities, you’ll be making meaningful progress towards what really matters to you and your business!

#3  Be Present When You’re Not Working

Many of us entrepreneurs suffer from living “in the business” and are constantly occupied with thoughts, ideas and worries around our businesses. This is why it’s important to make time to NOT think about your business. When our mind is on our business 24/7, it’s technically at work all the time. This is when we hit a wall at work or even burnout.

Give your mind and yourself the rest you need to reset and recharge every day. Schedule 15 to 20 minute breaks throughout your day. And when you’re done with work, give yourself permission to take your mind off work and stay present with yourself and anyone you’re spending quality time with. Let your body and mind reset and recharge, so you can come back with a healthier and more creative mind again and again!
