After having spent tens and thousands on courses and programs, and learned all the latest online marketing tactics and tools, I could no longer take the pressure and stress of being trapped in the hamster wheel of marketing tactics.

As these courses and programs promised, we did get results like - get the next 1000 followers or the next 300 subscribers, create your online course, learn FB marketing, start your Pinterest marketing, start your podcast, or conduct webinars. However, after learning all these tactics, we didn’t understand how we should prioritize the in our business, how they connect with each other, and more importantly, how they each fit into our business and our brand.

Does this sound familiar?

These tactics are like pieces of a puzzle, and we struggled to see the bigger picture, the final puzzle we are trying to complete. And the missing big picture, or the final puzzle, is your marketing strategy, and it serves as a guide as you build out your marketing and grow.

After iterations and loads of trial and error, we realized that the 1 most important thing that was lacking was our overall marketing strategy. Without this repeatable system and framework that brings us quality leads and growing consistently, year-round, learning any more tactic would continue to be a futile effort.

If you’re also looking for ways to take your marketing to the next level, and get off the tactic hamster wheel, start building your marketing strategy with the 5’W Formula:

Who

Who is your target audience? Can you describe them in 1 phrase? You cannot cater to everyone and anyone and stand out, and it needs to be narrowed down. Consider beyond demographics and focus on their psychographics, such as behaviors, beliefs, values, and overall sentiment towards the market.

What

What does your target audience want passionately and desperately? What are they interested in and want most? Connect with them through clear communication that speaks to them and their emotional desire. People are not buying the thing you sell, they are buying what the thing will do for them.

Where

Where are you showing up to communicate with your target audience? How are you showing up through each platform? Build a repeatable system that you can stick to provide value to them consistently and boost your know-like-trust marketing factor. Instead of doing all the things, decide which tactics you are integrating intentionally and strategically into your system. Create an experience built on strengthening trust, and nurture your relationships to multiply new and repeated sales and referrals.

To increase touchpoints and take your marketing success and exposure to the next level, explore suitable partnerships and media that align with your brand mission, and share your target audience.

When

When are you communicating with them? Commit to frequency, especially for your content marketing. When your target audience sees and experiences quality and relevant content they enjoy consistently, they not only become familiar with you but also trust you. Once you’ve gained trust, sales follow.

Why

Always be clear on why you are doing what you’re doing. If you were to begin a new initiative, such as starting a new blog, creating a new channel, or running ads, make sure you have a measurable goal. As most businesses have limited resources, anything you can’t measure should be put on the backburner instead of wasting away your resources.
