Your routine may be killing your creativity and possibly the true potential of you and your business.

As entrepreneurs, we ourselves constantly advocate for setting systems and schedules that help us boost productivity, work effectively, and optimize our efforts in our business. But, too much structure can also cause stagnation of your business and become counterproductive.

Simply recall the moments when you had your best ideas. Did they happen during one of those brainstorming sessions on your calendar? Or did these ideas come to you during unexpected and random times?

When done well, having a rigid schedule may help you get the day-to-day tasks done efficiently. However, it removes the occasional disruptions, flexibility, and stimulation that your brain needs to think creatively.

If you’re looking for ways to unleash more creative energy, it’s time to break your routines and get freshened up!

1. Plan your day with feel-good snacks

Get a boost of energy with lunch, snacks, or beverages that you enjoy and that nourish your body and brain. Set a daily schedule for when you get your breaks to enjoy these nourishments. This way, you not only have something to look forward to, but you also get the breaks you need to reset and recharge mentally and physically.

2. Block out 20% of your time for growth

You can only keep advancing if you actually make time for progress and growth. Allocate 20 percent of your time for learning and make it a daily or weekly habit. There are plenty of resources available for personal development, including webinars, online courses, conferences, and books. Make time and invest in yourself and in your growth, you deserve it!

3. Keep meetings under 30 minutes

Most people are now used to defaulting meetings to increments of 30 minutes, and they end up spending a significant amount of time talking about their work rather than doing the actual work. This makes meetings a huge time waster, especially when most team communication can be done in less than 30 minutes.

If possible, cut your meetings to 5 to 10 minutes if possible, which saves you more time for more important tasks, such as creative thinking and strategic decision making.

4. Limit to one main communication platform

Besides emails and texts, many businesses like to use messaging apps like Slack or Voxer to reach people faster. While these tools may help you get someone’s attention quicker, they’re often the main resources of distractions. This is also the reason why many people find themselves spending an entire day responding to messages, emails, and other people’s requests without any time left for the important needle-moving tasks in their businesses.

To remove these distractions that get you sidetracked from important tasks, keep only one main communication channel. And if needed, you could add a second channel specifically for urgent matters only.

5. Put together a new playlist

Introduce newness to the music you usually listen to while working. Put on new tunes that bring you calm, energy, joy, positivity, or whatever vibe that get your creative juices flowing.

6. Switch up the layout of your office space

Create stimulation and disrupt your old routines by changing the layout of your office, re-organizing your workspace, or clearing your desk. Changes in your external environment changes can help spark unexpected insights and ideas!
